Our History

Early Days
1955
Our credit union story began on January 12th, when a group of 7 Maine General employees banded together to form Maine Medical Center Federal Credit Union.
1964
Employees at Mercy hospital formed Mercy Hospital Employees FCU.
1971

The two credit unions merged, becoming Medical Services FCU.
1980s
The 80’s were a time of growth for the credit union.
1981
We began offering our first ‘share draft’ checking accounts, followed by IRAs, Direct Deposit and ATM cards in the early 80’s.
1985

We opened our Park Avenue branch – still our flagship branch today! We also began offering Visa credit cards.
1986
A year later, we grew our credit union family by merging with Sanborn FCU and Thomas Laughlin FCU.

1990s
We continued to grow our services, offering Money Market accounts and Share Certificates.
1990
Ken Acker became CEO and President.
1997
We launched Online Banking for members.
2000s
The 2000’s brought further growth and expansion to the credit union.
2004
We merged with Insurance Services FCU (Unum) and opened our charter to become a community credit union in Cumberland County.
2005

We officially changed our name to TruChoice FCU, becoming the credit union you know today.
We expanded our charter to include York County and opened our Buxton Branch.
2008
We merged with Portland Maine Transit FCU, expanding our membership further.

2010s
2010

We built our operations center in South Portland and launched one of our favorite traditions: our annual TruSpirit Award for employee excellence.
2012
We began offering our TruHero Card, giving members a way to donate directly to local organizations.
2014
We launched our Mobile App with remote deposit capture.
2015
We merged with Portland Maine Police Department FCU.
2016

We expanded our presence in Southern Maine by opening our Biddeford branch.
We also fully renovated and modernized our Park Ave Branch.
2018
We expanded our Field of Membership to include 10 counties in Maine (Androscoggin, Cumberland, Franklin, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Oxford, Sagadahoc, Somerset, & York County.) We also added in house mortgage origination and expertise, giving members more flexibility with home loans.
2020s
The 20’s have already seen additional growth for the credit union, as we continued to offer more digital services and partner with merging credit unions.
2021
We began offering full account opening online.
2022
We merged with Blue Cross Blue Shield Employees FCU.
2024
We officially hired our 50th employee.
2025

We proudly celebrated our 70th anniversary. Thank you to our members, our team, and our volunteers for all you have done over the last 70 years. Here’s to 70 more!
